Unlike many other holiday destinations there´s actually quite a lot to take in and do on Lanzarote. The best way to achieve this is to book car hire in Lanzarote. As you cannot really rely on the local bus services here. Expect to pay upwards of €15 per day for car rental and around €0.80 per litre of unleaded petrol.
Most sightseers head straight for the volcanic region of the island in the south, which is certainly impressive and which is home to over 300 now dormant volcanoes. But the north is the real heart of Lanzarote – as it has remained undeveloped and there are no tourist resorts here.
As a result visitors can catch a glimpse of life in traditional villages such as Haria. Where an excellent weekly market takes place every Saturday morning. Or explore the quiet cobbled streets of Teguise, which was the capital of Lanzarote until 1852.
The works of César Manrique are also very popular with tourists, as this local artist managed to create attractions that really blend in sympathetically with the islands volcanic terrain. He died in 1992 but his efforts helped to really put Lanzarote on the map. Earning it UNESCO protected biosphere status in 1994.
